Task Analysis of the Job Description of Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses in the Hospital Setting

Abstract
Purpose: The study was conducted to develop and analyze the task of gerontological advanced practice nurses(GAPNs).

Methods: The job description of GNPs was derived from literature reviews and survey and interviews with focus groups. The content validity was tested by experts. The data were collected from 150 hospital nurses using the questionnaire measure performance and appropriateness level for duties, tasks, and task elements of GNPs.

Results: The job description of GAPNs in Koreas consisted of 9 duties, 25 tasks and 130 task elements. On the duties, ¡®assessment¡¯, ¡®planning and implementation¡¯, and ¡®evaluation¡¯ revealed high frequency of performance and high level of appropriateness. The highest duty in performance frequency and appropriateness level was ¡®planning and implementation¡¯. ¡®Research¡¯, ¡®referral and collaboration¡¯, and ¡®managing and using resources¡¯ revealed low frequency of performance and low level of appropriateness.

Conclusion: Based on the results, it is suggested that GAPNs¡¯ activities such as research, referral and collaboration, and managing and using resources should be more emphasized in gerontological nursing care setting. It is necessary to make the political efforts for the legislation of role and task of GNPs.
